Vaginal Hysterectomy: A Vaginal Surgery Procedure

Vaginal hysterectomy is an operation that falls under the umbrella of Vaginal surgery. Furthermore, it gets rid of the uterus (womb) and cervix (neck of your womb) through the vagina. It is further possible to remove the ovaries the similar way but usually they are left alone.

When is it Required?

Hysterectomy is performed due to the following reasons.

1.  Heavy and painful periods.

2.  Fibroids, when muscle of the womb overgoes in certain parts.

3.  Uterine prolapse, when the womb drops down

Alternatives

1.  Pelvic floor exercises

2.  Non-hormonal and hormonal oral medications

3.  IUS or intra-uterine system. It is an implant containing a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone that fits in the womb.

4.  Conservative surgery to remove the lining of the womb or stop it from growing back

5.  Surgery to remove the fibroids (myomectomy) or to shrink the fibroids by uterine artery embolization.

Effects of Avoiding the Procedure

1.  Changes to monthly bleeding pattern if one has periods

2.  Increased abdominal (tummy) swelling

3.  More medication than regular to deal with the pain

About the Operation

The operation is normally performed under a general anaesthetic. However, different anaesthetic techniques are feasible. It usually takes around 45 minutes.

The gynaecologist will examine the vagina. A cut is made around the cervix at the top of the vagina. This further enables them to remove the womb and cervix.

They stitch the support ligaments of your womb to the top of the vagina. This reduces the chance of a future prolapse. Lastly, they may also place a pack in the vagina.

How to Get Ready for the Operation?

1.  Stopping smoking will help to avoid developing complications. It will improve your long-term health.

2.  Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight may lead to complications.

3.  Regular exercise will get you prepared for the operation.

Hysterectomy is a major operation. Besides, it is performed only when simpler treatments have failed to provide any improvement or relief.
